Arecanut is one of the major plantation crops of Kerala, especially in northern districts. Arecanut sector is showing a declining trend, both in terms of area and production. This is mainly due to incidence of diseases like Mahali (fruit rot) which needs high cost for plant protection measures, non availability of good quality planting materials and also lack of institutional support which has led to disinterest among arecanut farmers in adopting scientific cultivation practices. Hence it is proposed to provide assistance for area expansion, plant protection and other management practices. Marketing network for arecanut and value added products will be established. An amount of 100.00 lakhs is provided for this purpose for the northern districts of the state. Funds for Kasargod district can be located from Kasargod Package implemented through the District Collector.
Out of this an amount of 5.00 lakh and 20.00 lakh respectively are earmarked for development of arecanut in Idukki and Wayanad districts.
